USJN CAPITAL CITY CLASSIC

USJN CAPITAL CITY CLASSIC

During the first spring evaluation Next Sports Phenom had a chance to visit the USJN Capital City Classic.  There was a lot of representation from local teams and about 75 college coaches on hand to watch.  The event was well organized and for the most part the games were competitive.  Many of the kids have been seen and well covered throughout their careers, however, there were some newcomers that showed up and were very impressive.  I focused a lot of my attention on the younger crop of kids that will be the future of DMV basketball.  I listed some players that for whatever reason impressed me in some way.  There were more and the next wave of class ranking updates will be reflective of this as I couldn't mention every player in one article.

AZZI FUDD - 2021 - FAIRFAX STARS - 5'11" - GUARD

Azzi plays at a great game pace.  She is an excellent shooter and finisher.  She gets to the basket at will and is very accurate with her mid range pull-up.  Her size allowed her to be affective playing multiple positions during the weekend.  NSP was most impressed by her defense as she was disruptive in lanes and used her length to deflect and steal multiple attempts at passing over her head.  NSP felt that she was the all around best player in the building.

AYREKA BROWNING - 2018 - MARYLAND BELLES - 5'9" - WING

Ayreka is very good at attacking the basket.  She is a good finisher with elevation.  She has a good body and is able to still finish after contact getting her bonus free throw opportunities.

NIA CLOUDEN - 2018 - FAIRFAX STARS - 5'8" - POINT GUARD

Nia is fresh off of her Michigan State commitment announcement and made an immediate impact with her new Fairfax Stars team.  She unselfishly scored half of her team's first 30 points and was able to run the offense from the point while getting her teammates in scoring position.

VANESSA WOODFOLK - 2019 - VIRGINIA BELLES - 6'2" - FORWARD

Vanessa is a physical player that uses her body well to attack.  She can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket from the mid wing/short corner area.

HALLIE MCDONALD - 2018 - FAIRFAX STARS - 6'1" - POST

Hallie is a strong, physical post player that finishes well after contact.  The Appalacian State commit was relentless on the boards going after every loose ball and out muscling taller post players in the paint.

KANIYAH HARRIS - 2020 - FAIRFAX STARS - 5'10" - WING

Kaniyah is a quiet effective player that is sometimes overlooked until you look at the stat sheet.  She makes a lot of plays for other players, but she also showed that she can make plays on her own as well.

KENNEDY FAUNTLEROY - 2022 - MARYLAND LADY FINEST - 5'8" - POINT GUARD

For a 7th grader Kenendy is very poised.  She keeps her dribble under pressure until ready to make the play.  She has good height for her age and position and most certainly will only get better as she matures.

MADISON GREEN - 2018 - FAIRFAX STARS - 5'6" - POINT GUARD

Green showed her deep threat ability nailing mutiple three pointers to erase a 10 point deficit in the closing minutes to force overtime.  The JMU commit was effective both at the point and also off the ball.

TANEARA MOORE - 2018 - POWER MOVE - 5'10" - WING

I really liked Taneara's athleticism and her ability to finish in traffic.  She is very skilled and a solid division one level wing.  She was a standout the entire weekend.

ADRIANA SHIPP - 2019 - BWSL - 5'10" - GUARD

I think Adriana has the potential to be great.  She has the size to post up inside and the skill to run the point.  In a world where the majority of guards are 5'6" and under, she  immediately stands out on the court.

JA'NAIYA QUINERLY - 2021 - BWSL - 5'4" - POINT GUARD

Ja'naiya seems to have fun on the court as she plays with a little flair to her game.  She does just enough to impress without overdoing or showboating.  She has a good feel for where everyone is on the floor and where they are going to be next.  As she enters high school, I expect her to get taller and be the conversation of a lot of major division one coaches.

CARLY RIVERA - 2019 - FAIRFAX STARS - 5'5" - POINT GUARD

Carly is a no nonsense point guard, she wasn't flashy making plays but she was very efficient.  She has good court vision and a high IQ, she is the type of player that teammates love playing with.

SARAH DEESE - 2020 - MARYLAND LADY HOOPMASTERS - 5'4" - GUARD

I was impressed with Sarah's on ball defense and her anticipation in the passing lanes to get her hands on the ball for deflections.

JOVIA WINKEY - 2019 - VIRGINIA BELLES - 5'3" - POINT GUARD

Jovia was really good in transition.  She had a tendency to go right on virtually every possession I watched, however, she was effective doing so.  She is capable of using both hands and even though she is successful it may be easier to keep the defenders off balance if they begin to adjust.

JORDAN POOLE - 2020 - BWSL - 5'9" - WING

Jordan is an athletic wing that skies for rebounds and has the handle to go coast to coast for the finish after securing the board.

DOMINIQUE ALLEN - 2018 - POWER MOVE - 6'0" - FOWARD

Dominique showed well especially on the boards.  She has a college ready body and uses it well.  There were multiple ocassions that 4 to 5 players went up for a rebound and Allen was the one coming down with it to start the break.

DESHAUANA JONES - 2018 - BOO WILLIAMS GOLD - 6'0" - POST

Deshauana has a big body built for banging inside, but surprisingly she was very agile.  She can push the ball in transition and runs well with the guards.

MADISON BURRIS - 2018 - COLUMBIA RAVENS - 5'6" - POINT GUARD

Madison showed a nice shot and a good touch on her floater.  She can be a steal in the 2018 class for schools looking for their next point guard.

SYNIA JOHNSON - 2020 - LADY PRIME MARISSA COLEMAN - 5'7" - GUARD

Synia's speed and slight frame allowed her to slice through gaps in the defense.  She gets hit a lot when attacking, but seems to handle it well.  As she gets stronger she can absorb the contact and initiate her own.

ENIYA RUSSELL - 2020 - 5'10" - POWER MOVE - POINT GUARD

Flash and dash, this dynamic scoring point guard has a quick first step and makes plays with a little extra flair.  She has excellent size for a point and is able to see and pass over traps if she doesn't decide to split them.

MOLLY MCALEER - 2019 - MARYLAND BELLES - 5'9" - POINT GUARD

Molly came into the game and showed her range immediately.  She is a deadly sniper that can hit the deep ball at will without the need to get warmed up first.

TANIYA LAWSON - 2022 - MARYLAND LADY FINEST - 5'8" - WING

Taniya is a very active player and knows how to get the ball in her hands.  She can hit the three and had decent size.  She should focus keeping her balance which will help her stay in control to limit falls and potential injury.

NAIA SADDLER - 2019 - FAIRFAX STARS - 5'8" - GUARD

Naia has a good body and size for a guard and her willingness to crash the board from the perimeter and rebound stood out to me this weekend.

AJAE PETTY - 2020 - POWER MOVE - 6'1" - WING/FORWARD

Ajae is long, she has an okay shot and can rebound well.  Gaining strength can allow her to dominate in the class.

JAKAYLA BROWN - 2018 - FAIRFAX STARS - 5'10" - GUARD

When a team goes on a 10-0 run it is impressive, it goes to extraordinary when a single player does it to start the game in front of a line of college coaches.  Jakayla's second game of the day showed just how explosive she can be.  Defensively she is one of the best in the class.

SUNSHINE MCCRAE - 2019 - MARYLAND BELLES - 6'2" - FORWARD

So happy to see the Pennsylvainia native playing in the DMV.  Sunshine has the body and size to draw attention as soon as she walks in the gym.  She runs the floor and finishes very well.  She has been a regular at DMV events and is a noted player at each one.  Despite being listed as a post and having the body to bang, Sunshine has the skill to stretch the floor.

KENDRA JOHNSON - 2020 - BWSL - 5'8" - GUARD

Kendra has good size and shot the ball really well.  She is definitely one to keep an eye on going forward.

GABBY CADLE - 2018 - FAIRFAX STARS - 5'10 - FORWARD

Gabby rebounds well, she is not considered big for a post, but her with her ability to knock down shots from the perimeter she can easily be a stretch 4 or wing in college.

TIAN ADDISON - 2019-  FAIRFAX STARS - 5'5" - POINT GUARD

Tian has always been known for her shooting, but this weekend she showed that she can run a team and get others in position for shots as well.  She seemed calm and poised under pressure.

KELLY SIMMONS - 2018 - COLUMBIA RAVENS - 6'0" - FORWARD

Kelly was impressive working the entire court, chasing loose balls and getting rebounds that she didn't have the advatage on.  She is a post that is offensively solid from out to 13 feet and was able to defend in that area as well.

TAYLOR GIBSON - 2021 - MARYLAND LADY FINEST - 6'2" - POST

As a 2021 Taylor has an imposing frame and her ability to rebound and finish makes her an asset on any team.  She has improved each time that I have seen her and is on pace to have a great high school and college career.

ADRIENNE "AJ" DAVIS - 2019 - MARYLAND BELLES - 6'1" - FORWARD

"AJ" as she's called showed tremedous strength inside.  She was aggressive on the offensive boards and tough to stop without fouling once she got at full speed on her drives.

BRIELLE WHEELER - 2021 - 5'10" - MARYLAND LADY FINEST - WING

Despite have a slinging form to her shot, Brielle has the range and accuracy to hit consistently from deep.  She has great size for an 8th grade wing and runs the floor well.
